Summary
As Lead Researcher, I worked on a six-week research on smart solid waste management. The research was funded by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Philippines.
We completed case studies of two local government units in the Philippines. Using these case studies, we proposed policy roadmaps for smart solid waste management. We used the model policies of the G20 Global Smart Cities Alliance as main references.

Main Challenge
- With mobility restrictions caused by COVID-19, we had to conduct interviews through Google Meet.
What was unique about the experience?
- Conducting an online workshop was easier because of fewer logistic concerns.
- I learned that local government units in the Philippines are hindered by institutional barriers in resolving solid waste management problems. Truly, the solid waste management problem is beyond technical – it’s holistic.
